Please take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers.

My name is Marc Dimov, I was born in The Berkshires, Massachusetts in 1980. I received a BFA in Photography from Massachusetts College of Art and Design 2005. Currently, I live and work in NYC.

How did you get interested in photography? Where and what do you work besides photographing?

My interest in photography and art in general grew from my father who was a painter in his own right. His following of impressionist painters such as Van Gogh and Cezanne sparked my creative palette to make work of my own. Although I dabbled with painting in my adolescent years, I knew from an early age that my calling was photography. Painting, on the other hand, plays a different role in my life. I own a faux finishing and decorative painting business in NYC / Long Island, NY. Additionally, I am a freelance commercial and events photographer.

Tell us about your imagery.

My imagery spans landscape, still life and portraiture, rendering the limitless possibilities in which the photographic medium can be transformed. In my "Storm Basins" series, I create surreal images of dramatically lit suburban environments, and as with all my work, I continue to question the visual language of photography.

Could you tell us about your "Untitled Portraits" series?

These pictures explore the possibilities of creating individualized interpretations of the subjects with each viewer who looks at the work. By altering the sitters’ genuine appearances to the extent of contradictory skin tones, the complete and partial loss of facial features, and their out of focus qualities, the observer is given the opportunity to make their own assumptions.

This project delves into the psychology between human relationships coupled with the notion that our identities have become increasingly obscured. In this day in age when identity theft has become a common occurrence, we are constantly forced to protect our image and all that is sacred to us.

Interestingly, our identities are not even associated by our faces in many cases, instead strictly a series of numbers which renders us faceless. These photographs question our roles in modern society, how we portray ourselves and how we are read by others.

Please tell us a bit about your process. What’s the inspiration behind the "Untitled Portraits" work series? How does it all start, what techniques and materials do you use? Why have you chosen to present them in this form?

This body of work was inspired by a self-portrait that was created in response to researching Attention Deficit Disorder, a condition I discovered many artists live with. This investigation was the starting point of what would become "Untitled Portraits."

After looking at this single self-portrait for a year I decided to explore the concept of identity by photographing other subjects in a standardized passport style image. They were captured using a 4x5 camera on B&W film by which maximizing the control I had on altering my subjects' appearances with traditional equipment.

In addition, I intentionally made technically incorrect exposures in camera and in the darkroom to further push the idea of identity theft. The final output of this series is 18x23 gelatin silver prints.
